About variables (AskiaVista)

A Variable created in AskiaVista can contain data from one or more existing variables (these existing variables might be ones in the original survey file, or other user-defined variables). For example, a variable called age, gender and income might combine the following questions:

This variable could then be used to create a table showing high-earning women aged 18-34 in rows as a response, and high earning men aged 18-34 as another response. This table could be created on the fly in AskiaVista, without the need to request data processing specialists to build a new database/QES file with the variable.

Note that viewing and modifying variables depends on the rights that have been assigned to you by your system administrator.

The types of variable that can be created are as follows:

• Closed: a variable that allows only one possible answer;
• Numeric: a variable that stores a numeric value, with or without bounds.
