From multiple existing combinations (AskiaAnalyse)

This option allows you to create a variable containing all the possible combinations to the responses of an existing multiple-response questions. For example, if the existing question had responses a, b and c, the new question would have responses a, ab, ac, abc, b, bc, c.

To create a new variable with all possible combinations of a multi-coded question:

  1. In the edit menu select create a variable.... The calculated question window appears.

  2. Select from multiple existing combinations.

  3. Next to question, click ....

  4. Select the source question on which you want to base your new variable. This must be a multi-coded question.

  5. In separator, enter the character/s you want to use between the existing response texts when combining them to create the new responses. For example, train x bus if " x " is the separator (note the spaces on either side of the default separator; include spaces in your own custom separator, where appropriate, to make the new response labels readable).

  6. Select take in account order if you want the response order in the new variable to reflect the order in which responses were selected.

  7. If you want to include a new response combination, if a certain number of respondents selected them, enter that number in if counts >. For example, if you enter 10, then a response combination will only be included in the new variable if at least 10 respondents selected that combination. Click recalculate... to refresh the list below, to reflect the new minimum counts you have entered.
