Post-code an open question (AskiaTools)

Use this option to recode any existing data in an open question into a new closed question.

Note: If you prefer to have several agents working simultaneously on the coding, you will either want them working simultaneously on copies of the QES in AskiaTools, as described in this topic, or working on CSV files (delimited ASCII) in an external program like Microsoft Excel.

Once coding is complete, you will need to import the data back into the main QES file, from the QES file copies or CSV files. You can achieve this by using the tool overwrite data using ID and shortcuts.

AskiaTools will automatically select interview sheets containing answers to the open question to be post-coded, thereby speeding up the process. Thus, on the same screen, you will see the respondent's text response, create the appropriate response items, and recode the respondent's answer accordingly. This option will automatically create a closed question, containing your post-coding, which will be indexed to the open question.

To post-code an open question:

  1. In AskiaTools, open a *.QES file.
  2. In the questionnaire’s tree structure, select the open question to be post-coded, so that it is highlighted.
  3. In the tools menu, select post-code an open question.
  4. Specify a shortcut for the new closed question which will be created, or use the default name suggested by AskiaTools.
    Tools_PostCod
  5. Click OK. The following post-coding dialog opens:
    Tools_PostCod2
  6. Use the arrow buttons to move go backwards and forwards through the interview sheets. The left-hand window displays the text answers which can also be amended. The right-hand side window displays existing response items for post-coding. Click Ins to insert a new response item.
  7. Once you have finished your post-coding click OK.
