In AskiaSurf, a response is a pre-coded answer to a single-response or multiple-response closed question, such as:

Askiasurf allows you to match the same question across successive waves even where the responses vary. For example, in a brand list, a new brand on the market may be added to a question at wave 3, while in wave 4 one of the other brands is removed as it is no longer available. However, the question is still fundamentally the same, and you would want to be able to track its data over successive waves even though the brand list changes over time. For the purposes of analysis, you may want to amalgamate two responses (e.g. if a brand is replaced by a new, but equivalent item in a product range, or if the brand name changes).
During reconciliation AskiaSurf does its best to match equivalent responses within a question, and also questions where the only difference is changes to the response list over time. It alerts you to these differences, and gives you the chance to over-ride the decisions it has taken.
