The questionnaire tab, found in the left-hand pane, displays the structure of the current .QES in a tree format, showing the chapters and variables it contains.
From the questionnaire tab, you can add a question to your table simply by dragging it to the rows, columns or edges tab as appropriate (for example, if you want it to appear in your table's rows, you would drag it to the rows tab).
If you want to view summary information about a question, double-click the question. A window opens, containing details of the question's captions, type, count, base and answer categories.
To display the questionnaire tab, if it is not already visible, simply click questionnaire at the left-hand side of the AskiaAnalyse window:

The variable types that you may see in the questionnaire tab are as follows:
| Variable type | Description |

|
Question that allows only one possible answer. |
|
|
Question that allows one or more answers to be selected simultaneously. |
|
|
Numerical question with or without lower or upper bounds. |
|
|
Question containing verbatim data (alphanumeric). |
|
|
Date format question. |
|
|
Randomised format question. |

Scale type question. |

A repeated section of questions which have been defined as a loop within within AskiaDesign. For example, a survey of households could contain a question about the occupational status of each individual within the household (working, student, retired etc). A grey question mark icon indicates that the question summarises all repetitions of the same question within the loop, which means it will have a different base to questions outside the loop: usually the number of cases multiplied by the number of loop iterations per case. Questions inside the loop with the more usual yellow question mark icon are sub-questions, and are not summarised. Their bases will usually reflect the number of answers for each sub-question. The base and counts for any question can be observed by selecting the question and referring to the counts in the response distribution panel. Loops may also contain other loops. You may need to set the analysis level explicitly when working with loop questions, in order to show the desired base in your tables.

This icon will appear if the variable is not recognised as belonging to one of the above variable types. This may happen if you import a survey from a system which has variable types that are not supported in AskiaAnalyse. |
The context (right-click) menu gives you access to the following features:
| OPTION | DESCRIPTION |
|---|---|
|
Send to rows |
Add the selected variable(s) to the result table's rows. |
|
Send to columns |
Add the selected variable(s) to the result table's columns. |
| Send to edges | Add the selected variable(s) to the result table's edges. |
| Group responses... | Allow creation of a new question by grouping the answer categories into subtotals. |
| Group values... | Convert a numeric or open question into a categorised question. |
| Change level | Recode the selected question into another data level. Select as a closed question or as a numeric question, as appropriate; the question will be encoded as a variable of the selected type. |
| Create a variable... | Create a new variable. |
| Modify... | Modify the definition of a created variable. |
| Delete | Delete the currently selected variable (the variable you right-clicked when you invoked the context menu). |
| Copy | Make a copy of the selected calculated question to the clipboard. The question can then be pasted, creating a duplicate. |
| Paste | Duplicate a previously-copied calculated question. The copy is given a unique shortcut (this is derived by appending a number to the end of the question shortcut). |
| Clone analysis | Applies the settings from questions in a saved portfolio to the selected question. In order to select the saved portfolio, and the way in which the settings will be applied, select analysis cloning from the tools menu). |
| Create a sub-population for each response |
Allows you to generate a sub-population for each automatic answer category. To generate sub-populations selectively for a subset of responses, use the option
Create a sub-population for each response from the context menu of the reponse distribution panel. |
| Create a loop... | Allows you to create loop variables based on the selected questions. Two new calculated variables will be created: a loop question of the type closed level and a sub-question of the type closed by single script, with appropriate scripts. |
| Write data into a new variable: | Create a new variable, containing the data in the selected variable. This variable will be accessible in AskiaDesign, AskiaTools, AskiaEntry and AskiaTranslator. |
| Write data into an existing variable | Rewrite the data in the selected variable into an existing variable. You will be asked to specify the variable into which you want to write the data. |
| Reinvert questions | Inverts the database. |
By default, when you select a closed question in the list, all of its responses are also selected (i.e. they will all be included in your table). However, you can omit specific responses if you wish. To do so, follow the procedures below.
Right-click the variable and select open/close, or simply double-click the variable. The variable's response data is displayed, enabling you to select which responses you wish to integrate into your analysis by clearing (de-selecting) the responses that you wish to ignore.
To select which responses appear in your table:
Double-click your question. The list of answers appears.
Drag the answer categories you want to include to rows, columns, or the edges of your table. You can move more than one answer at the same time: hold down CTRL to select more than one, or SHIFT to select consecutive answers.
