Variable list (AskiaVista)

The variable list shows a list of the variables that have been defined in AskiaVista, for the currently open questionnaire. To display the variable list, select Variables in the drop-down list at the top of the left-hand panel.

From the variable list, you can add variables to your table definition, make them accessible to your clients and colleagues, create filters based on them, rename them and delete them. Note that you cannot define new variables from the variable list; to create new variables, you need to open the Variables view.

To select a variable in the list, simply click it. You can select a group of adjacent variables by holding down SHIFT as you click, or multiple specific variables by holding down CTRL as you click. Just as with questions, you can drag and drop variables into the Rows, Columns and Edges of your table definition, or directly onto the Results panel.

When you select a variable, the details of any responses are shown in the response panel.

At the top of the variables list, you will find the following commands:

Command name Description

Send to

Provides an alternative to dragging the selected variable(s) to the table definition (select Rows, Columns or Edges to send the variable to that area of your table).

icn-rename Rename the first selected variable Allows you to rename a variable. If you have more than one selected, this commands renames the highest selected one in the list. Type a new name for the variable, then click Save (or Cancel, if you change your mind).
Remove the selected variable(s) Permanently deletes the selected variable(s). To prevent accidental deletion of a variable, you are asked to confirm your action when you select this command (answer Yes or No).

Share variable

This command is revealed if you click More:

Allows you to share the variable with your clients and co-workers. The share variable modal window opens.

Create one filter/response

This command is revealed if you click More:

Creates a series of filters based on the selected variable. When you select this command, the Create a filter modal window appears. Select the responses for which you want to create filters, and de-select the responses for which you don't want to create filters.

In Name formatting, enter the structure of the name that will be used for each new filter. By default, this is {Q}:{R}, which means that the names of each filter will be the question name, then a colon, and finally the response name. For further details of the available keywords, see keywords.

If you select Overwrite filter if it already exists, any filter with the same name as any of the new ones will be deleted.

The option Use the definition of responses determies what happens to the generated filter when the underlying calculated variable changes.

  • If the option is selected, the filter will be based on the definition of the calculated variable's response items (i.e. the conditions that define it). This ensures that the filter will remain correct If the calculated variable is later deleted, because it is based on the underlying script.
  • If this option is not selected, the filter will be based on the calculated variable's ID. This means that if the the calculated variable's response item definitions are later updated (e.g. from ??Age?? >= 35 to ??Age?? >= 40), then the Filter will be updated automatically.
Edit

Opens the variable in variables view, allowing you to makes changes to its definition.
