Question properties (AskiaAnalyse)

The question properties allow you to customise the content and appearance of the selected question in your tables and charts. To open the question properties, right-click the question in the rows, columns or edges tabs of the tab definition window, and select properties.

Note: Your modifications to question properties will only be saved in the current table definition. If you want to use these properties in your new table definitions, we recommend that you to save them in a profile.

The following options are available, organised on the property sheet into several groups:

Option group Description

Caption

The short question caption.

If you edit this property, "caption" is shown in the custom setting column of the rows/columns/edges tab.

Sort and suppression

Allows the answers to a question to be sorted by frequency of response.

This option group contains two selectors, as follows:

1. Three radio buttons to specify the type of sort to be performed. The following options are therefore mutually exclusive:

  • Do not sort responses: No sort will be applied to this question.
  • Allow sorting of responses: The responses will be sorted, depending on the sort options selected in the general settings for the current table.
  • Allow sorting of responses but in reverse order: The responses will be sorted in a decreasing order responses (depending on the sort options selected in the general tab settings).

2. A single checkbox:

  • Allow Suppression: When selected, allow response options with zero responses to be suppressed. When left unchecked, no response options will be suppressed, which will take precedence over any suppression settings given within the sorting tab in the in the general settings for the current table.
Note: the sort setting when you first drop a question into rows, columns, or edges during table definition will either be do not sort responses or allow sorting of responses, depending on the global option sort question (by default).

Settings

Allow calculations for numerics: This checkbox option allows the display of statistics on a question for which weightings have been assigned to each answer (response scaled). You then need to choose which type of numeric aggregation you require.

Numeric aggregation: If the option "Allow calculations for numerics" is selected, this option specifies the calculation method used to aggregate the weighted numeric data. The methods are as follows:

  • sum (the sum of values given as a response to the question)

  • minimum (the minimum value given as a response to the question)

  • maximum (the maximum value given as a response to the question)

  • number of interviews (the number of interviews in which the question was answered)

  • mean (the mean value of responses given to the question)

  • median (the median value of responses given to the question)

  • standard deviation (the dispersion around the mean value of responses given to the question)

  • variance (the mean of squares of deviations from mean for the responses given to the question).

Transform into NR: An optional list of codes which will be treated as system DK or no response.  This will have the adding them to the System DK value for the question and no longer treating them as a valid response to the question, or including them in the mean or the question base.

Transform into NA: An optional list of codes which will be treated as not asked (also known as system NA). This will have the effect of adding them to the System NA value for the question and no longer treating them as a valid response to the question, or including them in the mean or the question base.

Break table after: Insert a caesura, meaning cut the page after this question. If this option is activated, the text page break appears in the custom setting column in the row/column/edge tab.

Develop questions at run-time. This option only applies to questions within a loop. If selected, this will ensure that all available questions within a loop will be developed whenever the table is run, even if the number of iteratated questions within the loop has increased since the last time the table was run.  If this option is not selected, then the user is responsible for adding in any new questions that the loop may contain, as the table will only contain those loop questions present when the table was previously defined.

Responses

Caption format: Allows you to apply a specific format to the categories of an answer on questions with graded answers.

Example 1:

%c: %V

Allows you to have the response (%c) followed by the value (%V):

'Definitely: 10' , 'Fairly: 5', etc.

Example 2:

%V kms

5 kms , 10 kms, etc.

Example 3:

%C

Allows you to have the responses in capitals:

'DEFINITELY', 'FAIRLY'

Custom weighting

Defines custom weighting options for the question. Any settings you make here will be displayed against the question in the custom settings column in the row, column or edge tab.

Sub-population: Select the sub-population that you want to use for this question.

Universe: Select the universe that you want to use for this question.

Weighting: Select the weighting that you want to use for this question.

Level: Select the level that you want to use for this question.

Note: If you leave a setting on default, Askia will use the settings specified in the general tab.

Formatting

Apply special formatting to the question title in the results table:

Bold: set the question title to bold.

Italic: set the question title to be italic.

Underlined: set the question title to be underlined.

Font colour: set the question title font colour.

Font background: set the question title background colour.

If you make any changes to formatting, this is indicated in the custom setting column of the rows, columns or edges tab.

Apply to responses and calculations

If this option is selected, your formatting will be applied to response text and calculations, as well as the question text. If the option is de-selected, only the question text will be affected by the formatting. This option applies to questions/responses in rows, columns or edges.
